The Difference Between Invention and Innovation
The words invention and innovation are often used interchangeably. They’re both associated with new ideas, technological breakthroughs, and creative thinking, so it’s easy to assume they mean the same thing.
But they don’t.
An invention is the creation of something new. Innovation is the process of improving, applying, or successfully bringing that idea into the real world.
Both are important, but they play different roles in shaping the products, services, and technologies we use every day. Understanding the distinction helps explain why some brilliant ideas change the world while others never move beyond the drawing board.
What is an invention?
An invention is something that has never existed before.
It introduces a completely new idea, device, method, or technology. Inventors solve problems by creating something original rather than improving an existing solution.
History is full of inventions that transformed society. The telephone, the light bulb, the airplane, and the transistor all introduced technologies that had not previously existed.
